What Is The Difference Between Mold And Mildew ?

Apartment Listing

Ever wondered what mold and mildew exactly are? Well, for beginners, there is not much difference between these two microorganisms. They both belong to the same family called “Fungi”. Then, what is the difference you may ask. The primary difference is in their habitat (the type of surface they grow on) and their external appearance (color and texture).

Mildew grows on fabrics, papers, plants, etc. They are white or gray in color. In terms of texture, you can find powdery mildew and silky mildew. The powdery ones belong to the ascomycota family of fungus and grow luxuriantly on flowering plants. They appear in the form of white or gray blemishes. The silky mildews on the other hand grow on food substances like potatoes, grapes, etc. They belong to the oomycota family. Their appearance defers from one plant to the other.

Molds are multicolored and can appear in the form of red, black, green and blue patches on foodstuffs. They thrive on sugary acidic mediums. They can also appear on the walls and ceilings of rooms, which have high moisture content. They produce numerous spores, which are air borne, and can travel great distances and affect a large area in a very short period. They produce toxic substances responsible for causing numerous health and respiratory problems to humans and animals.

Mold and mildew have one aspect in common: both require moisture for survival. If you want to get rid of them, you have to maintain your place moisture free. Improving the ventilation will also help. You can also use mildew remover to scrub these microorganisms off surfaces. Asking for professional help is also an option to consider.
