What Kind Of Turtle Do I Have ?

Apartment Listing

Having a turtle as a pet is not bad if one is able to take good care of it. There are over 300 species of turtles ranging from smaller lighter ones to larger heavier ones. However, the type of turtle that one should choose to keep as a pet depends upon the size as well as the amount of care that is needed.

In a natural habitat, turtles can survive easily. However, in an artificial aquatic environment like an aquarium or backyard pond, they need to be provided the suitable living and eating conditions.

Among different varieties of turtles, there are four main species, which are generally preferred by people who want to keep turtles as pets. These include Box Turtles, Sliders, Mud Turtles and Painted Turtles.

The box turtles, which grow to about 6 inches in size, are carnivores and need to be fed with insects and bugs. They are mostly land dwelling creatures, and are not very enthusiastic about traveling. The slider is among the most preferred pet turtle of all. Keeping them as pet is not very difficult as they are omnivores, which means that they feed on both plants and animals. However, they have a tendency to grow as big as 11 inches.

Painted turtles are often good to keep if the owners are able to provide them with sufficient sunlight, which they enjoy the most. They mostly love to be in water, but also demand good sun basking space. The mud turtles, on the other hand, grow only up to 5 inches. They are seen as a good choice for pets due to their eating habits, and also for the fact that they are quite small in size, which means that the owner does not have to construct big tank for them as they grow older.
