Historically, a turtle has found symbolic representation across cultures. Among ancient Chinese traditions, a turtle was seen as a creature with supportive role. It was thought to support the world on its back with its four feet being the four corners of the ancient world map.

It is well known that turtle has a long life. Among traditional Africans, there is a belief that with age a person gains more experience in life which help him or her attain wisdom. Therefore, as the reptile has a long life, it was seen as a creature representing wisdom by early Africans. Among Native Americans, the calmness and agility of the animal is representative of patience and perseverance.

In addition to the Chinese and African cultures, the turtle finds significant mention in the Hindu traditions as well. In fact, one of the incarnations of the Hindu God Vishnu is as a turtle. Here to, the supporting role of the turtle highlighted. According to Hindu mythology, when the gods and demons were churning out the ocean to extract the nectar of immortality, it was God Vishnu in the form of a turtle that provided support to the world.  

In addition to cultural traditions and mythology, turtle is also visible as one of the astrological symbols in many astrological calendars. In the modern day world of computer science, the turtle was an important element of an early computer language called Logo. The cursor in Logo was called a turtle because of its triangular structure looked like a turtle.

Hence, from ancient mythology to modern day computer science, the turtle has found mention in one way or the other.
