How Can I Tell If My Dog Is Pregnant Without A Vet ?

Timely detection of pregnancy in dogs can help give proper care to them. However, how can you tell if your dog is pregnant without consulting a veterinarian? An X-ray or a blood test can reveal if your dog is pregnant or not, but to confirm your suspicions about the pregnancy in your un-spayed female dog will mean taking a more closer look at your pet’s behavior.

The first signs of pregnancy in dogs are visible 14 to15 days after the mating session is over. The nipples in the female dogs get darker and larger.

Just like humans, morning sickness is present in dogs 21 to 28 days after mating. So, if your dog is showing signs of decreased appetite or vomiting or displays some noticeable changes in her eating pattern, then it is time to consult a vet. She could also sleep a lot or be less active during the day.

Some dogs might also have some vaginal discharge which is a typical sign of pregnancy. Hence, it is always advisable to keep a close watch on such cases if you suspect her to be pregnant.

Other symptoms in your dog if she is pregnant include unusual tiredness, unrestful nature like shredding of toys, shoes and carpets, changes in her behavior (which could also be due to other reasons!), ‘nesting’ tendencies, or an increase in the size of her belly. And, midway into the pregnancy, you might even feel the puppies in her stomach!

Above everything, a proper consultation with a vet is highly advisable during the run up to pregnancy. Only a vet can tell you how to properly take care of pregnant dogs, and also put her on the much needed vitamins, and nutrients and give other required directions for her well-being.
