Dog Most Likely To Bite

Apartment Listing

Around 4.7 million people are affected by dog bites each year in the US. Out of these, children are the ones who are bitten most often. While there are no specific breeds of dogs that are most likely to bite, it is still a fact that all dogs, big or small, bite when they are provoked.

Equally important to consider is the fact that un-spayed and un-neutered dog are three times more likely to bite. Also, dogs that are trained to play ‘attacking’ games are more likely to bite people as they do not understand ‘games’ and real-life situations.

However, some reports point out to the fact that certain breeds have higher levels of tolerance and temperance, while a few others attack even at the slightest provocation. For example, the report by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) has said that the dogs most likely to bite are the un-neutered male dogs. And, the breeds that pose the highest risk include the controversial Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, and the German Shepherds. Other breeds of dogs in the list include the Siberian Huskies, Alaskan Malamutes, Doberman Pinschers, and Chow Chows, among others.

Another report prepared by the University of Pennsylvania and published in the July 2008 edition of the journal of Applied Animal Behavior Science has identified the dachshund as the breed that is most likely to bite not only strangers but also its owners. The report also features little dogs like Chihuahua, the Jack Russell Terrier, the Australian Cattle Dog, the American Cocker Spaniel and the family favourite Beagle.

Whatever the breed of dog, it is always better to seek the help of an expert like an animal behaviourist to help in training your dog, particularly when your dog growls, nips or bites even at the slightest provocation. Also, it is important to not disturb a dog that is sleeping, eating or while she is caring for her puppies.
