Are Pit Bulls More Dangerous Than Other Dogs ?

Apartment Listing

Recently, there have been a lot of controversies surrounding pit bulls, and how dangerous they can be compared to other dogs. There are also demands from some quarters about banning this breed of dogs. However, there have been mixed reactions from animal lovers, and the public in general on this issue.

Pit bulls are a cross-breed of bulldogs and working terriers. Some say that the resultant new type of dog was also used for pit fighting, and hence, the name pit bull dog came into public usage. However, according to animal enthusiasts pit bulls are not actual breeds, but types of several breeds. Hence, banning them on account of rising pit bulls attacks should encompass all breeds involved.

Pit bulls have a known history of being domesticated at home as watchdogs and pet dogs. Today, there are three types of breeds of pit bulls, namely the American Staffordshire terrier, the Staffordshire bull terrier, and the American pit bull terrier. Apart from these three, there are many other dogs that have similar appearance, but might not belong to the category of pit bulls.

Generally speaking, the number of people bitten by dogs in the US every year has been around 4.5 million. And, some reports have said that three breed of dogs, the German shepherds, rottweilers and pit bulls, have been the most biters of humans. While a few reports from the Centers for Disease Control point fingers at pit bulls like dog bites, some see the German shepherd as more menacing. Pit bulls are big biters, but then there are other breeds who bite equally.

According to the American Humane Society, there is no factual support to claim the theory that pit bulls have locking jaws. Also, there is no scientific evidence to support the myth that pit bulls have more bite force. And, according to a recent study by the American Temperament Testing Society on the temperamental levels in dogs, the pit bulls fared better than miniature poodles, beagles and collies. Also, pit bulls have the same nervous system as any other breed and hence, could feel pain when attacking.

Any breed of dog can be harmful when provoked and not otherwise. Hence, it is always advisable to be careful with any breed of dogs when these are left to be with children.
